President Al-Alimi Discusses Humanitarian Situation and Peace Efforts in Yemen with UN Secretary-General

His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, along with Major General Aidarus Al-Zubaidi and Sheikh Othman Mujali, Council members, met in New York with Mr. António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to discuss the latest developments in the Yemeni situation. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
During the meeting, the President of the Presidential Leadership Council praised the role of the United Nations and its Secretary-General. Additionally, He commended their valued efforts to mitigate the consequences of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which has been exacerbated by the terrorist attacks of Houthi militias on oil facilities and international shipping lanes.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council briefed the UN Secretary-General on the developments in the national situation.The Secretary-General was also briefed on the economic, service, and human rights reforms being led by the Council and the government, in addition to the required necessary UN interventions at all levels.
His Excellency also addressed the commendable mediation efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman to launch a political process under the auspices of the United Nations. He stressed the government's openness to various initiatives aimed at achieving peace in the country, based on the comprehensive solution references agreed upon nationally, regionally, and internationally, particularly the relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
The President touched upon human rights violations committed by Houthi militias and discussed ways to push them to release United Nations, humanitarian and civil community staff unconditionally.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General reaffirmed the international organization's commitment to supporting the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, mobilizing the necessary resources to alleviate humanitarian suffering. Moreover, he stressed the organization’s commitment to harnessing all efforts to resume the political process and enabling Yemenis to build their own state based on partnership, justice, and respect for human rights.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya'e Mohsen Al-Zindani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Sa’adi, Yemen's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Mr. Mohammed Al-Hadrami, Yemen's Ambassador to the United States. Additionally, the meeting included Mr. Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General, and Ms. Joyce Msuya, the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
