President Al-Alimi Reaffirms State Commitment to Fully Resolving Detainees File
Riyadh
His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, received today, Monday, the government negotiating team concerned with the detainees file, headed by the team’s chief, Hadi Haig.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council was briefed by the government delegation on the outcome of the latest round of negotiations held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, under United Nations sponsorship, which resulted in an agreement for the release of 1,750 detainees and abductees.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council welcomed the humanitarian agreement, congratulating the families of detainees, forcibly disappeared persons, and prisoners on this important step toward family reunification. He described it as both a humanitarian and national priority.
President Al-Alimi praised the national and humanitarian spirit, as well as the high sense of responsibility demonstrated by the government negotiating team in handling the issue. He noted that this file remains one of the matters most closely linked to the suffering of thousands of Yemeni families.
He affirmed that reaching this agreement represents an important humanitarian step that restores hope to affected families and confirms that serious and responsible efforts are capable of achieving tangible results despite the complexities of the situation. He noted that the Yemeni state views all detainees in various places of detention, including those misled by the militias, as Yemeni citizens for whom the state bears responsibility to protect their rights and support their rehabilitation.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council renewed the commitment of the Council and the government to move forward toward fully closing this humanitarian file and resolving the issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons across all regions of the country.
He stressed the importance of accelerating implementation of the agreement in accordance with the agreed mechanisms and timelines, in a manner that avoids prolonging the suffering of families or exposing this achievement to obstacles. He considered progress on the humanitarian track as a factor that strengthens confidence in the possibility of advancing other issues that serve Yemenis’ aspirations for peace, stability, restoration of state institutions, and an end to suffering.
President Al-Alimi also praised the significant fraternal role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the support and facilitation it provided, which contributed decisively to achieving this major accomplishment.
He further commended the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan — its leadership, government, and people — for hosting the longest round of consultations and for providing all necessary facilities to ensure the success of the negotiations.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council also highlighted the constructive role of the Sultanate of Oman in hosting the preliminary stages of the consultations. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, the supervisory committee tasked with implementing the agreement. He also expressed appreciation for the professional and humanitarian role of the International Committee of the Red Cross as a key partner in completing the closure of this file.
President Al-Alimi reiterated the special importance that the negotiating team should attach to verifying the condition of political figure Mohammed Qahtan. He stressed that the issue remains a top priority for the state and in implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
He committed continued support for the negotiating team and the provision of all necessary resources to ensure the success of the upcoming implementation phase, leading to the release of all detainees in accordance with the principle of “all for all.”
The President also addressed the issue of relief workers and employees of humanitarian organizations and the United Nations who are arbitrarily detained by the Houthi militias. He affirmed that this matter will remain among the highest priorities of the state and government in view of the noble humanitarian role they have played in serving Yemenis and alleviating their suffering.
President Al-Alimi urged the government negotiating team to continue raising the issue through all channels and contacts. He urged them to spare no effort in helping secure detainees’ release, in coordination with the United Nations and regional and international partners.
His Excellency reaffirmed the government’s readiness to provide all necessary support and facilitation to ensure the success of any serious efforts leading to the release of relief workers and employees of humanitarian organizations and the United Nations. He considered this a moral, humanitarian, and legal obligation.
