President of the Presidential Leadership Council, President Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi received today, Sunday, Mr. Yuichi Nakashima, the Japanese Ambassador to Yemen. They discussed cooperation relations between the two friendly countries and prospects for expanding bilateral partnership during the coming period, particularly in the fields of early recovery, energy, capacity building, and infrastructure.
During the meeting, the President of the Presidential Leadership Council expressed his deep appreciation for the notable progress in the long-standing Yemeni-Japanese relations and for Japan’s prominent humanitarian and developmental role over decades. He noted that Japan has become associated in the Yemeni public consciousness with development, education, healthcare, mine action, and support for local communities.
President Al-Alimi also praised Japan’s supportive stances toward Yemen’s stability and unity, as well as its continuous contributions to alleviating the humanitarian suffering. He described Japan as one of the largest donor countries in the sectors of health, electricity, education, agriculture, water, and demining.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council expressed his aspiration for the partnership with Japan to move beyond the humanitarian response phase toward a broader stage of development, recovery, and reconstruction. He also voiced hope for enhancing the future presence of Japanese companies and expertise in infrastructure, energy, ports, and technical education projects.
President Al-Alimi briefed the Japanese ambassador on the latest developments in Yemen, the course of government reforms, efforts to strengthen monetary stability, unify security and military decision-making, and improve basic services.
In this context, he commended the support provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, describing it as a key pillar in consolidating security and stability and backing the ongoing reforms.
The President also praised Japan’s attention to the humanitarian aspect, affirming that the government continues to treat humanitarian issues, foremost among them the detainees’ file, as an ethical and national priority. He considered the recent agreement a positive step toward confidence-building and addressing the remaining humanitarian issues.
President Al-Alimi further addressed the Houthi threat to international maritime security, describing the militia as an advanced Iranian arm aimed at destabilizing regional security and stability.
He stressed that the security of the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait constitutes an international issue affecting the global economy, including Japanese commercial interests. He emphasized that protecting maritime corridors requires tangible support for the Yemeni state and its legitimate institutions.
