His Excellency Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council POP, today met with Dr. Rola Dashti, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting discussed ESCWA’s interventions in providing technical and advisory support to the Yemeni government. These include programs for institutional and human capacity building, institutional governance, and development recovery. They also cover social justice, women’s empowerment, and strengthening resilience across vital sectors, particularly renewable energy utilization and responses to climate change.

President Al-Alimi praised ESCWA’s prominent role in supporting Arab countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He affirmed Yemen’s aspiration to strengthen cooperation with the Commission in the economic and social spheres. This comes in light of the unprecedented challenges caused by the war ignited by the terrorist Houthi militias with support from the Iranian regime, and its profound impact on the economy and the social fabric.

The President also underscored Yemen’s keenness to benefit from ESCWA’s expertise in promoting good governance and institutional reforms. He highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of transparency and accountability. He further stressed the need to strengthen the capacities of national institutions to manage public resources efficiently, considering this a key entry point for building trust and consolidating stability.

Furthermore, His Excellency expressed Yemen’s aspiration for expanded partnership in the fields of education and health. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation in creating job opportunities for youth, combating poverty, and empowering women. The President reiterated Yemen’s commitment to close collaboration with ESCWA to achieve shared objectives. He affirmed that such cooperation would help the Yemeni people overcome the current ordeal and move towards a more stable and prosperous future.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaea’ Al-Zandani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Major General Saleh Al-Maqaleh, Director of the President’s Office.
