President Al-Alimi Praises Greece’s Role in Protecting Maritime Waterways

His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, along with Council members Major General Aidarous Al-Zubaidi and Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi, met today, Tuesday, in New York with Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly sessions. 

Discussions focused on the latest developments in the local situation, bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, and opportunities to strengthen them across various fields.

President Al-Alimi praised the distinguished Yemeni-Greek relations, commending Greece’s stance in support of the legitimate government and the Yemeni people. He further acknowledged Greece’s active role in promoting peace opportunities in Yemen and the region through its membership in the UN Security Council and the Sanctions Committee established pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 2140.

His Excellency stressed the critical importance of full compliance with and effective implementation of the arms embargo and sanctions measures imposed pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolutions. This includes enhancing the role of the UN Panel of Experts in monitoring and inspecting to prevent the flow and smuggling of weapons and narcotics to the Iran-backed terrorist Houthi militias.

He also praised the important role Greece plays as Chair of the United Nations Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict, affirming Yemen’s support for all efforts aimed at preventing the recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts.

The President of the Presidential Leadership Council addressed developments in the national situation, the efforts to alleviate the severity of humanitarian suffering—which has been exacerbated by terrorist Houthi militia attacks on oil installations and maritime shipping vessels. He noted to the required international support to build upon the notable improvement in the national currency’s position as a foundation for a more sustainable recovery phase.

His Excellency further stressed the importance of Greece’s role in supporting the Yemeni government’s capacities to protect maritime waterways and deter shared threats, noting that the security of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is not the responsibility of Yemen alone, but a responsibility of the entire international community.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya’a Al-Zindani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and on the Greek side, H.E.  Ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
