President Al-Alimi Affirms to International Community: Houthis a Hopeless Case For Peace
Riyadh
His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, received today, Wednesday, Ms. Abda Sharif, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom, to discuss bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, the latest local developments, and updates regarding international support programs for comprehensive reforms in the country.
The President praised the United Kingdom’s supportive positions toward the Presidential Leadership Council and the government, as well as the pivotal role played by the UK in supporting the Yemeni people in international forums, given its responsibility as penholder on Yemen in the UN Security Council.
His Excellency also commended British humanitarian and developmental interventions, including support for financial and monetary stability, institutional capacity-building, as well as proposed assistance in improving media content and countering misleading narratives about the Yemeni file.
The President of the Presidential Leadership Council touched on the progress achieved in the comprehensive reform program and the serious steps taken by the government and the Central Bank in implementing the Council’s decisions and the economic recovery plan. Key measures included the formation of budget and import regulation committees, aimed at strengthening transparency, public revenues, and stability of the national currency.
The meeting also discussed the ongoing threats posed by the Houthi terrorist militias to international peace and security, with firm support from the Iranian regime, including the growing risks stemming from the continued flow of Iranian weapons to the militias.
In this context, His Excellency drew attention to the escalating security threats to international peace and security arising from the Houthis’ explicit collusion with terrorist organizations, including Somalia’s Al-Shabaab movement, in addition to the militias’ continued use of the economy and banking transfers as tools of war against Yemenis.
The President stressed the need for a more decisive international response to these threats, including expanding sanctions on the Houthi militias, affirming that the Houthis have become a hopeless case as a serious partner in making peace. He emphasized that increasing pressure on them is the most realistic peaceful option for achieving peace and stability in Yemen and the region.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Yahya Al-Shuaibi, Director of the Presidency Office.
