President Al-Alimi: Securing Red Sea Begins with Supporting Government and Deterring Iran’s Role
Munich
President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, called for broad international solidarity, manifested in concrete actions, to support efforts in restoring the Yemeni state and extending its authority over the entire national territory. This, he emphasized, is essential to transforming the Red Sea from a “source of threat” into a “bridge of peace,”as it has been throughout history.
Speaking at a panel discussion on Red Sea security on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, President Al-Alimi stressed, “To achieve sustainable solutions, the legitimate government must be empowered to exert full control over its territory, with a focus on fostering development and stability.”
He added, “As I stated from this very platform last year, the key to achieving this lies in strengthening the government’s capabilities and enforcing relevant international legitimacy resolutions.”
The President underscored that the primary threat originates from Yemeni territory. Therefore, the solution requires international support for the Yemeni government to safeguard its land, alongside enforcing measures to prevent the flow of Iranian weapons to its militias in Yemen. “This is the key lesson we must learn from the Red Sea crisis,” he stated.
Reaffirming Yemen’s strategic role, President Al-Alimi stressed that Yemen is not only defending itself but also protecting global security. He urged the international community to convert solidarity into concrete steps that bolster the Presidential Leadership Council’s efforts to restore the state and enhance its ability to protect this vital maritime passage.
The President pointed directly to Iran as the driving force behind these threatsfrom within Yemeni territory. He asserted that de-escalation in the Red Sea and international waters remains contingent on Iran’s agenda and interests.
He also highlighted that without Operation Decisive Storm led by the Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy, the Houthis would have taken full control of Yemen, posing even deeper and more complex risks to international peace and security.
President Al-Alimi warned that any delay in addressing this threat would come at a heavy cost to the world. He emphasized the need to focus on the root cause of the crisis: ending the Houthi coup, enforcing relevant international resolutions on banning Iranian arms shipments, and deterring Tehran from interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.
